This article gives evidence for the correct supplication that is to be recited when leaving one’s house.
To deny for Allaah everything which He has denied for Himself in His Book, or which His Messenger denied for Him; along with believing that its fully-perfect opposite is confirmed for Allaah - the Most High.
Brother Shiraz asked:
<The du’aa to say when leaving the house is "Bismillaahi tawaqaltu Allallaahlaa hawla walaa quwatta illaa billaah" this hadeeth is found in many books which list du'aa for various situations and times and is reported in Sunan Abu Dawud and other books. Does anyone know of any scholar (particularly Shaikh al-Albaani) who has judged this hadeeth to be weak?>
Here is a brief reply:
Shaykh al-Albaanee has indicated that this hadeeth is authentic in a number of works. For example, he declared it 'saheeh' in Saheehul-Jaami' (no. 499). He has also authenticated the hadeeth in Saheeh Sunan Abu Daawood (no.4249) and Saheeh Sunanut-Tirmidthee (no.2724).
Furthermore, al-Haafidh al-Mundhiree said in at-Targheeb (no.2389): "It is reported by at-Tirmidthee who graded it as hasan."
Shaykh ’Abdul Qaadir and Shu’ayb al-Arna’oot said in their checking to Ibnul-Qayyim's Zaadul-Ma’aad (2/p.335-336): "At-Tirmidthee said it is a hasan saheeh hadeeth and it is as he said, and it was authenticated by ibn Hibbaan (2375)."
In actuality, the principal chains of transmission recorded by Abu Daawood, at-Tirmidhee and Ibn Hibbaan do contain a defect. However, this is of course not sufficient to declare the hadeeth weak because there are in fact other isnaads by which the hadeeth is established. Obviously, the hadeeth scholars mentioned above took these supporting isnaads into account when giving their judgement on the hadeeth. These supporting isnaads can be found as follows:
Ibn Maajah (no.3886) from Abu Hurayrah
Ibn Maajah (no.3885) also from Abu Hurayrah
Al-Bukhaaree in al-Adabul-Mufrad (no.1197)
Al-Haakim in al-Mustadrak (1/119)
This explains the ruling on this hadeeth given in Saheehul-Musnad min Fadaa`ilil-’Amaal (no.1100) where it states: "It is hasan due to supporting narrations."
And al-Haafidh Ibn Hajar said in Nataa`ijul-Afkaar (1/163): "I have found a witness for the hadeeth of Anas (i.e the one mentioned by Aboo Daawood etc.) that strengthens the isnaad however it is mursal..."
