Benefit: Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān on the Methodology of Seeking Knowledge
In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
Do not speak without knowledge and do not seek knowledge from other than its doors.
Do not take knowledge from other than its people; likewise, do not suffice yourself with reading books and then claiming to have become knowledgeable [by] memorising without understanding. Merely memorising is not sufficient! Indeed this is the way of the people of deviation; we ask Allāh for well-being. So it is upon our youth—may Allāh grant them understanding—that they give importance to this matter, that they sit with the people of knowledge, that they listen to them and take knowledge from them. Do not rely on your own understanding or your books and the likes of this, and [do not rely on] those who do not know [i.e. ignoramuses] so that they do not say:
إِنَّمَا يَخْشَى اللَّـهَ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ الْعُلَمَاءُ لَوۡ هَدَٮٰنَا ٱللَّهُ لَهَدَيۡنَـٰڪُمۡۖ
