In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
On the authority of ʿĀishaʾ (raḍī Allāhu ʿanhā) who said: “O Prophet of Allāh, will you not give me a kunyah?” The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) replied: “Take the kunyah of your son (ʿAbdullāh ibn Zubayr)”. So she was given the kunyah: Umm ʿAbdillāh (al-ʾAdab al-Mufrad, pg. 851).
Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalī(raḥimahullāh) notes: In this ḥadīth, we find the permissibility of desiring and requesting a kunyah by those who have children and those who do not. This is due to the honour of possessing a kunyah.
