Benefit: Degrading Learned Individuals Was Practiced during Jāhiliyyah

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl al-Shaykh (حفظه الله) stated: “Ridiculing and degrading the scholars is not from the religion; rather, it was practiced in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance.”

فليس من الدين الطعن في أهل العلم، وليس من الدين الانتقاص من أقدارهم بل ذلك من عمل الجاهلية

Benefit: History Often Repeats Itself

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl al-Shaykh (حفظه الله) stated: “Whoever reads history books will discover that when fitnah strikes, confused individuals [often] hasten to ridicule the scholars which is repulsive.”

Benefit: Teach and Learn the Qurʾān Correctly

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl al-Shaykh (حفظه الله) stated:

The teacher must recite then the student must follow suit, since the Qurʾān is learnt. [Similarly,] the Qurʾān was recited to the Prophet (ﷺ) then he (ﷺ) emulated its recitation, as the Mighty and Majestic said:

فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَاهُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ
“So when We have recited it [i.e. when Jibrāʾīl have recited the Qurʾān to you, Muḥammad (ﷺ)], then emulate its recitation” [Sūrah al-Qiyāmah, 75:18].

This is how the Qurʾān is taught. As for correcting the student until he recites accurately [i.e. without hearing the teacher’s recitation], then this is incorrect. The teacher must recite then the student must follow suit.

Benefit: The Meaning of Shaykh al-Islām

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Questioned about the meaning of the term ‘Shaykh al-Islām’ [i.e. the Shaykh of Islām], Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl al-Shaykh (حفظه الله) stated:

What is meant by the term ‘Shaykh al-Islām’? Does this mean that Islām is a student of the Imām of daʿwah [i.e. Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb (رحمه الله)], or that Islām is a student of Ibn Taymīyyah (رحمه الله)?

This is not what is meant. ‘Shaykh al-Islām’ is a designated title, and it was first utilized in the latter part of the second generation of the Hijrah. It was then applied to anyone who was a role model, had companions and followers, and possessed different branches of knowledge and information. He is called: “Shaykh al-Islām”, which is a rank just below the rank of ‘Imām’.

The highest rank is that of ‘Imām’ followed by the rank of ‘Shaykh al-Islām’. This is a designated sequence [i.e. the rank of ‘Imām’ proceeding that of ‘Shaykh al-Islām’ is merely a sequence the scholars agreed upon to identify and to differentiate the status and the level of knowledge of the scholars], so it is not said about the Companions (رضي الله عنهم) that they are Shuyūkh al-Islām [i.e. Shaykhs of Islām], although Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (رضي الله عنهما) were mentioned with this title in some Aḥādīth.

How to Read the Books of the People of Knowledge

  Shaykh Ṣāliḥ Āl al-Shaykh

Seeking knowledge is a lengthy path that is not possible to embark upon except by abandoning play and amusement and approaching it in a serious manner. This is because Allāh the Exalted, the Most High, described what He revealed to Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-salām), and He (Allāh) is the most truthful in speech, as a weighty word. Allāh the Exalted, the Most High says, “Soon shall We send down to thee a weighty word.” [Sūrah al-Muzzammil, 73:5]
