Benefit: If the Bell Is the Musical Instrument of al-Shaytān, What About Your Melodious Ringtones?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

‘O Muslims - Music Intoxicates the Intellect!!

 17. Ridding your house (if you can) of any type of bells

Abū Hurayrah reported Allāh's Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) as saying: “The bell is the musical instrument of Shayṭān.”1

If this is the case - the bell is the musical instrument of Iblīs - then how could it be that a Muslim claiming to fear Allāh, has reverberating in their cars or pounding in their homes; jazz, rhythm and blues, pop, hip-hop, gangster rap tunes or the like? Much worse than that, is the musical tune coming from the mobile/cell phones in the houses of Allāh, especially during the times of ṣalāh!

Shaykh al Islām Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah said in his book ‘Madaarijus Saalikeen’ (1/485) said: “How astonishing! That is, what type of faith, light, insight, guidance and knowledge can be gained from listening to tuneful verse and music in which most of  what is said is prohibited and warrants that Allāh be angry with and would warrant the punishment of Allāh and His Messenger?"

He also said in his book ‘Ighaathatul-Lahfaan’ (1/258-259) “Singing [and music] is worse and more harmful than stories of emperors, because it directs [one] to adultery and fornication and it is the fountainhead of hypocrisy. It is the snare of the Shayṭān, and it intoxicates the intellect. Its obstructing (people) from the Qurʾān is worse than any way in which other types of phony speech blocks them, because the souls of people lean towards [sounds like this] and have the desire to listen to it”.

How can anyone who has the slightest amount of baṣīrah (keen insight) and life in his heart attempt to draw near to Allāh and increase his faith by enjoying something which is hated by Him, and He loathes the one who says it and the one who accepts it?

Benefit: Is the Dajjāl (Anti-Christ) from the Children of Ādam?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
[Q]: Is the Dajjāl (Anti-Christ) from Banī Ādam (Children of Ādam)?

[A]: 146. Shaykh Ibn al-ʿUthaymīn: The Dajjāl is from the children of Ādam. Some of the scholars say that he is Shayṭān, and some say that his father is human and his mother is a jinn. However, these statements are incorrect, for it is apparent that he is from the children of Ādam, and that he needs food and drink, etc. For this reason, ʿĪsá (ʿalayhī al-Salām) will certainly slay him in an ordinary manner as a human being is slain.1

[1] Shaykh ibn al-ʿUthaymīn, Majmūʿ al-Fatāwá wa-al-Rasāʾil, vol.2

Benefit: No Attention Is Paid to Doubts in Worship in Three Scenarios

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn (رحمه الله) stated:

Doubt [by definition] is: going back and forth between two things whichever of them occurred, and no attention is paid to doubt in worship in three scenarios:

  1. If it [stemmed] purely from delusion, which has no reality to it such as the whispers [of Shayṭān].
  2. If it occurs frequently with an individual so much so that he does not perform an act of worship except that [he has present with him doubts] in it.
  3. If it occurred after he completed an [act of] worship.
Hence, no attention ought to be paid to it so long as he was not certain of the affair. Consequently, he should act upon his certainty.

Benefit: O Muslims, Don't Be Fooled! The Deceptive Innovator Will Always Approach You with a Smiling Face

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

"Shaykh al-Islām al-Thānī Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allāh have mercy on him said:

And from among his (shayṭān’s) repertoire of schemes and ploys is that he invites the slave (of Allāh) with his good character, cheerfulness and joyfulness to types of sin and wickedness.  As a result, he will meet and greet him (the sunnee) with that which will not enable him to rescue himself from his evil except his display of displeasure, giving an angry look and turning away from him.  So, the enemy will act kindly towards him, greeting him with joyfulness, a glowing face and beautiful speech. Then, he will attach himself to him, and have a strong desire to save himself from his clutches; however, he will be unable to. As a result, the enemy (Iblīs) will continue to move among them (the deviant, innovator that works for Shayṭān and against the sunnee slave) until he achieves his desired goal.  Finally, he enters upon the slave with his plots by way of good character and a shining face.  It is for this reason, the 'Doctors of the Heart' have advised (us) with turning away from the People of Innovation, not extending to them the greetings of sʿaláms and happy, glowing faces or even meeting them (at all) unless it is with gloominess and sternness!"

Benefit: Repelling the Shayṭān

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

(1) Say: "I seek refuge with (Allāh) the Lord of mankind, (2) The King of mankind (3) The Ilah (God) of mankind, (4) From the evil of the whisperer (devil who whispers evil in the hearts of men) who withdraws (from his whispering in one's heart after one remembers Allāh). (5) Who whispers in the breasts of mankind. (6) Of jinn and men." [Sūrah-Naas, 114:6]

Shaykh ʿAbd al-Rahmân as-Sa’dî (rahîmahullâh) comments:

This Sūrah comprises seeking refuge (Isti'aadah) with the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind and the Ilāh of mankind from Shayṭān, who is the source and essence of every evil and mischief. The one from whose fitnah (trials) and wickedness is that he whispers into the breasts of men, beautifies for them evil misdeeds, displays it to them in an appealing image, and entices their desires towards performing it. He makes good deeds appear repugnant to them, and causes them to lag behind from (performing khayr), and presents it to them in a guise other than its own. He is always in this state of whispering and withdrawing, meaning: he withdraws when the servant remembers his Lord, and seeks His help (towards repelling the devil). Thus, it is obligatory upon the servant and all of mankind to seek aid and refuge with His Rubūbiyyah, and hold fast to it. The whole of creation falls under (the monarchy of) His Lordship and Sovereignty; he has seized every creature by the forelock. Mankind must also seek aid and refuge with His 'Ulūhiyyah (Divinity), for it was for His worship alone, that they were created. This worship, however, is not perfected except and unless they repel the evil of their enemy, who desires to cut them off (from worshiping Allāh alone) and obstruct their way towards it, and who desires to make them his followers, that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire. Whispering could come from jinn or from man, hence Allāh says: “…Of jinn and men.”

Benefit: Shayṭān Loves Which More: Sins or Bidʿah?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

ii. Bid’ah (Innovation) Bidʿah or religious innovation is more beloved to Iblīs than sin and insubordination because the damage of innovation is in the core of the religion. Moreover, it is that type of sin which is not usually repented from because the innovator has deluded himself into believing that he is doing something that is sanctioned and therefore permissible, but in reality, it is in opposition to the call of the Messengers, and more importantly, the call and way of Allāh’s Last Messenger. Innovation is an entrance to disbelief and associating [partners with Allāh]. Hence, if Iblīs obtains the performance of innovation from an individual thus making him an innovator, he then makes that person an agent and one of his callers. If Iblīs falls short [with that] and is unable to ensnare the servant with this type [of trick], and if he is one of those who were given by Allāh the gift of the [Pure] Sunnah and hatred of the people of innovation and misguidance, he [Iblīs] continues on to the third kind. The great Imām of Ahl al-Sunnah, Sufyān al-Thawrī [d.167H] said: “Innovation is more beloved to Iblīs than sin, since a sin may be repented from but innovation is not repented from” [al-Lālikaa'ee – ‘Sharḥ Usūl I'tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah’ (no. 238)] .1

Benefit: The Dunyā Is the Devil's Intoxicant

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Yahya ibn Muʿādh al-Rāzī stated: “This worldly life is the Devil’s intoxicant (Khamr). Whoever is intoxicated by it will not regain consciousness until they are in the ranks of the dead, in a state of regret, among the losers.” In the book ‘Uddah As-Saabireen of Al-Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, p. 349, Daar Ibn Al-Jawzee. Ibn Al-Qayyim said in the same book, “The intoxicating effect of loving this world is far more potent than the intoxication that results from drinking alcohol, by a long way. The one who is intoxicated by this will not gain his senses until he is in the darkness of his grave, and [if he regains his senses] and the effects of this cease while he is living then he will surely appreciate the extent of intoxication that this worldly life can cause and that it is more severe than alcohol...” (p. 349) Ibn Al-Qayyim said, “Numerous narrations have been transmitted from the rightly guided predecessors where [they have mentioned] that the love of this world is the root of [all] sins and the source of them" (p. 349). He said, “The love of this world and leadership is that which has filled the Hellfire with its inhabitants, and the practice of abstinence as it relates to the life of this world and leadership is that which has filled Paradise with its inhabitants” (p. 349). By Allāh, the scholars of Islām, or the doctors of the hearts, have spoken the truth; this is truly an epidemic. Even some non-Muslims are now attesting to the fact that materialism has brought nothing but misery to the world, and they have defined this disease as ‘Affluenza’. However, they fail to understand that true happiness can only be achieved through belief in Allāh and His Messenger.1

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

In the Qurʾān, Allāh subḥānahu wa taʿālā mentions the story of Ādam and Iblīs. Allāh reminds us that Shayṭān is a clear enemy to mankind. From his tricks and plots is to cause disunity in the ranks of the Muslims and sow seeds of discord among them. Our elder, Abū ʿUways, raḥimahullāh, offers an important reminder about this old game that Shayṭān often plays. Listen to this short audio. May Allāh reward you and unite us and all the Muslims upon the truth.
