A Condemnation of the Ottawa Terror Attack and an Advice to Canadian Muslims

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

A Condemnation of the Ottawa Terror Attack and an Advice to Canadian Muslims

In the name of Allāh to whom belongs all praise, may He make good mention of and bestow peace upon His Messenger.

Yesterday's brazen attack on the Canadian parliament and the killing of an army reservist has caused a shockwave of anxiety and fear across the country. The lunacy and cowardice of the assailant and whoever may be associated with him is beyond words. Details are yet to emerge as to the background, motives and whether there was indeed a network behind the individual identified. This may become clearer in the coming days or like other many acts of terrorism, it may never become clear. Nonetheless, what has emerged is that a Muslim was involved. He was unsuccessful in his bid to storm the parliament building and was swiftly killed. Whether he was mentally ill or not, a practising Muslim or not, the outward reaction by many in society will be: Islām made him do it.

Being aware of all of this, it is important for Muslims who follow the Qurʾān and Sunnah upon the methodology of the pious predecessors to keep the following in mind:

  1. Qadr Allāh wa mā’ shā’ fa`al - This fateful and evil act was decreed to pass by the Lord of all mankind. It is a trial for all those affected by it and will be a trial for Muslims in Canada at large.
  2. Do not dwell on reading media reports which often glamorise or chastise for the purpose of selling media. Do not dwell in debating and arguing in comments attached to stories. Do not rely solely on the media to tell you the truth and do not likewise turn to conspiracy theorists to reveal the truth. Simply get on with your life in a positive manner, seeking the pleasure of your Lord daily through righteous actions.
  3. At this time of increased stress and focus on Islām and Muslims, be proactive. Exemplify the good manners of Islām, show your neighbours, family, co-workers etc. the beautiful code of conduct that exemplifies Islamic manners and morals. Do not shy away and cower; do not be afraid to show your Islām at a time like this, if you do, then groups like ISIS (or any copycat groups) have succeeded in marginalising you in society. Likewise, anti-Islamic movements will be happy with your feeling of ostracisation. When 9/11 happened, we immediately took to the streets of Toronto, wearing identifiably Islamic garments and engaged fellow citizens about Islām, about terrorism, and about ibn Ladin. The reaction was very positive; many people thanked us for simply being out there and explaining things. Even though we sought to clarify the reality of extremism and expected some harsh reactions, we generally didn't receive them. People approached us and said: We know Islām doesn't promote these things. One lady became tearful and said she felt sorry for what we would have go through (as Muslims) because of what some extremists may have done in NY. The point being that if you dwell in the gutters of tabloid media and debate with ignorant people who spew hatred towards Muslims on blogs or newspaper comment sections, it will absorb and waste your time. However, if you engage Canadians positively, face-to-face, at the local store, at work, at school etc., it will show them what it really means to be a Muslim. Inform them what our Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mentioned about a people who would appear - calling them "khārijites" (renegades), isolating themselves and terrorising society, and how they would depart from Islām. Teach them the central message of Tawḥīd (pure monotheism) and you will likely find a very positive result in shā’ Allāh.

To duck your head, to move around in fear, to become shy about your Islām (as some did around 9/11) will only support the idea that Muslims are outsiders in Canadian society. If you do encounter ignorant comments or harshness, then reply to them with good manners. Even if a person won't desist in his harshness, others will see the behaviour of a Muslim in the face of oppression. Our Messenger, Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was most patient in the face of personal attacks or insults.  Remember that our Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: “There is nothing heavier in the Scales (on the Day of Judgement) than good character” [Jāmi’ at-Tirmithī (2002)]

Consider how vile a presentation of Islām groups like ISIS present. In reality, they are not a representation of us, their behaviour is in sharp contrast to manners of our prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), as Allāh has mentioned, “Verily in the Messenger of Allāh you have a fine role model” [Sūrah al-Ahzāh, 33:21].  The Prophet Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: “I have only been sent to complete upright moral character” [Musnad Aḥmad (2/381]. So at a time like this, when Islām is being questioned in the hearts and minds of Canadians, even under difficult circumstances, it is an opportunity to show society the purity of tawḥīd and the uprightness of the Islamic creed and how it produces an impeccable, upright character. Indeed those renegades who terrorize society only do so because of a corrupt underlying creed that is alien to Islām, its Book and its prophet.

The Prophet Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: “I swear by Allāh, he does not believe! By Allāh, he does not believe! By Allāh, he does not believe!” They asked him, “O Messenger of Allāh! Who?!” He replied: “The one whose neighbour is not safe from his atrocities” [Sahīh al-Bukhārī (6016)]. In a similar narration, Abū Hurayrah (may Allāh be pleased with him), mentioned the wording in Sahīh Muslim (46): “Anyone whose neighbour is not safe from his atrocities shall not enter Paradise.” The Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) advised his beloved wife Umm Salamah, “(The one with) good manners gets the best of this life and the hereafter.”

So it is an Islamic obligation, commanded by our Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), to exemplify the rights of good behaviour with our neighbours and those in society at large. These are codes of conduct we live by. This is what Islām teaches us. These are the textual proofs and evidences that have eluded those misguided youths who have sought Islamic learning by watching YouTube extremist propaganda videos through the hours of the night and not by seeking it from the mouths of orthodox Scholars of Islām.

Islām is a religion of fairness, justice and rights; a religion that provides safety and sanctity to society. Those who have sought to enact a jihādist version of Call of Duty on the streets of Ottawa are ignoramuses; misguided individuals who have strayed far away from the merits of Islām. Allāh mentions in the Qur’an the likes of those who kill innocent people: “It would be as if he killed the whole of mankind; and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the whole of mankind” (Sūrah al-Mā’idah, 5:32].

These misguided individuals have distorted the texts of the Qurʾān and the Sunnah to fulfil a politicised objective that is foreign to Islām, and that is one of violent revolution, indiscriminate killing and terror. In turn, they harm themselves, they harm innocent people, and they bring about more damage upon the image of Islām than any think tank, conspiracist or disinformation agency could muster comibned.

We recommend that our brothers and sisters pay attention to and distribute the following documents and sources. They will help you to understand these issues and to engage Canadians in a positive way:

A Condemnation of the Quebec City Mosque Massacre

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

A Condemnation of the Quebec City Mosque Massacre

In the name of Allāh to whom belongs all praise, may He make good mention of and bestow peace upon His Messenger.

Sunday's senseless and horrific attack on a Quebec City mosque was an act of brutality and terrorism. It was an act of slaughter where a young man indiscriminately killed Muslims, at a time of worship, in a place of sanctity, with children running around the prayer hall. This is terrorism, plain and simple. Terrorism is not a religious doctrine. It is a savage, evil act, in which revolutionaries seek to impose their world view on the rest of us. Acts of terrorism have been committed "in the name of Islām", in the name of Christianity, for racist objectives, and of course for political motives. Details have yet to emerge as to why the shooter, in custody, Alexandre Bissonnette, decided to kill and injure Muslims engaging in evening prayers. Nonetheless, it should be condemned, just as we condemned the Ottawa terror attack, when a ceremonial (unarmed) guard was gunned down by a terrorist. We don't say Muslim or Islamic or Jihad because the shooter represented none of the aforementioned. Likewise, this evil young man, who turned his automatic weapon towards the backs of unsuspecting worshippers that fateful Sunday evening is not representative of Whites, Christians, Quebecors or Canadians. These two extremist acts have one thing in common, the use of brute violence to impose revolutionary idealism on the rest of society, and an element of sheer cowardice. Unable to convince people in civilised terms of their jaded objectives, in frustration, they resort to murder, because only they are right (in their own minds) and the world is a basket case.

Muslims and non-Muslims alike, in Canada and beyond, have rejected this evil act. There has been an outcrying of support from all corners of the world for those traumatised by this massacre. $127,000 was raised in just 21 hours, by Muslims and non-Muslims alike, to contribute to funeral costs for the deceased. In fact, when the Ottawa terror attack occurred, our own neighbours in Toronto, where our centre and mosque is located, messaged us to offer support and to tell us we are welcome (in spite of the bigotry that was being spewed [by some] at the time towards Muslims at large), this was the level of concern they had for their Muslim neighbours and colleagues.

Islām is a religion that provides the utmost in peace and security to people and societies; a religion steeped in rights, balance, justice and respect. That evening, in an act of devotion that Muslims perform five times a day, those worshippers were turned towards their creator in worship, standing, bowing and prostrating, beginning their prayers with the recitation of the following beautiful verses from the Qurʾān:

In the Name of Allāh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
All the praises and thanks be to Allāh, the Lord of the ʿAlamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists).
The Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful.
The Only Owner (and the Only Ruling Judge) of the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)
You (Alone) we worship, and you (Alone) we ask for help (for each and everything).
Guide us to the Straight Way
The Way of those on whom You have bestowed Your Grace, not (the way) of those who earned Your Anger, nor of those who went astray.
[Chapter: al-Fātiḥah]

Is this what they were hated for? Is this why they were killed? Is there a more beautiful devotion than that of complete submission to our Lord and Creator? Surely not. We remind Muslims in Canada, to follow the best of examples, that of our prophet, Muḥammad, (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) who said: “I have only been sent to complete upright moral character” [Musnad Aḥmad (2/381]. So exemplify just that, engage your Canadian colleagues and neighbours and teach them about Islām, teach that about the prayers that were being offered that night. Now, more than ever in this country, is a time for education and understanding.

May Allāh raise the rank of his noble Messenger and grant us all safety and security.

Benefit: Harm None

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Al-Fuḍayl ibn ʿIyād stated: By Allāh, you are not permitted to inflict harm on a dog or a pig without just cause. How could you then harm a Muslim?1

Benefit: Inciting Muslim Youth Towards Jiḥād and Financing Them Without the Permission of the Leaders

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ Al-Fawzān, a member of The Permanent Committee Of Scholars, Saudi Arabia, was asked:

Is it permissible to notify the appropriate authorities upon individuals who we know are inciting the youth to go and (fight) Jiḥād and providing them with the funds without the permission of the leaders; and what is your advice to these kinds of people?

Answer:

Firstly, they should be advised. If they accept this advice and cease these activities then all praise is due to Allāh. If they do not accept this (advice) then in order to prevent them from harming the Muslims and the Muslim children, those in charge should be informed (of their behaviour) so that they can seize them. This person sends the Muslim children to battlegrounds and to destruction for no purposeful reason and he sits here. It is amazing that some of them deliver sermons where they get over emotional, and they encourage and send the Muslim children whilst they themselves sit in their houses, eating and drinking. All of this is unacceptable and rejected but this is just an example of their astonishing inconsistency.1

Abū Khadījah discusses the fallacy of ISIS, and al-Baghdadi's so-called "Khilāfah". Their claim to leadership is false, rather they are a band of butcherous buffoons feigning leadership of the Muslims from isolated desert areas.

Benefit: O Muslims - Don't Sympathise with the Khawārij!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

In a return visit to Toronto during the Fall of 2014, our noble brother Abū al-ʿAbbās Mūsá Richardson delivered an excellent khuṭbah in which he warned the Muslims from  the emotion-based recruiting tactics of ISIS, the false claimants to an "Islamic State" and leadership over the Muslims. He explained that they are Khawārij  (renegades) those who the Prophet Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) labelled "dogs of the hellfire". Our beloved brother stressed the fact that it is not permissible to feel sympathy for them in any way as they are the helpers of Shaytān and do not represent Islām in any fashion whatsoever.

Benefit: Saudi Scholar Slams al-Shabāb Call for Terrorism in Canada

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Questioner: Al-salāmu ʿʿalaykum

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Hādī1: Wa ʿalaykum al-salām

Questioner: I love you for Allāh's sake.

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Hādī: May Allāh—the one whom you loved me for—love you.

Questioner: O noble shaykh, your salafi sons [term of endearment] who reside in Canada say that there is a misguided khārijī group in Ṣumālīa called Al-Shabab Movement, they call the Muslims who reside in Canada to engage in a crime (killing the innocent etc.) at the biggest mall in North America which is located in [Edmonton] Canada. What is your advice to the Muslims who reside in Canada?

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn HādīI say, do not obey those people (al-Shabāb), nor pay attention to them, as you are living in these countries, and it is required from you to be the best of representatives for the Muslims in those countries, not being evil messengers for Islām and its people.

Do not obey those people who are requesting this from you [to engage in this crime], for verily they are calling you to evil; refuge is sought in Allāh from this. Whoever calls to guidance will have the reward similar to all those who follow him without their reward diminishing in any way and whoever calls to evil, he will have the sins similar to all those who follow him without their sins decreasing in any way. 2

These people should not be obeyed or concerned with because this will cause harm to the Muslims who reside in Canada, America, and the whole Western world, in addition (to that) it will present the image of Islām with an evil image that will make the enemies (of Islām) flaunt and slander the Muslims using this (evil image).

So when acts like this are committed (criminal acts which al-Shabāb call for) they (the enemies of Islām) find a chance to confirm their unjust rumours about Islām. So it is not permissible for you to answer their call (al-Shabāb) rather it is ḥarām (prohibited to answer them in their request). Likewise, you should abide with good in these lands that gave you the rights of residence when you faced oppression in your lands.

Benefit: So, You're Impressed by the Lunacy of Jihadist Beheadings?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

In a sidebar benefit recorded in Masjid Raḥmah (approx. 2002), during a series of classes on al-ʿAqīdah al-Wāsitiyyah, our beloved brother Abu ʿUways (raḥimahullāh) addresses some foolish individuals who were amused upon hearing about the khawārij beheading a non-Muslim in Saudi al-ʿArabīa who was under the protection of the Kingdom. Abū 'Uways (رحمه الله), refutes the takfīrī ideology and goes on to discuss that our ummah is not a nation of unjust killings; it is a nation of mercy. Our beloved Messenger (ﷺ), taught us not to harm an animal unjustly, let alone a human being.

Narrated by Ibn 'Umar (رضي الله عنه): "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'A woman entered the Fire because of a cat which she had tied, neither giving it food nor setting it free to eat from the vermin of the earth.'" (Reported Ṣaḥiḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 4, Book 54, No. 535.)

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه): "The Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'A prostitute was forgiven by Allāh, because while passing by a panting dog near a well she saw that the dog was about to die of thirst, so she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover, she drew out some water for it. So, Allāh forgave her because of that.'" (Reported in Ṣaḥiḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 4, Book 54, No. 538.)

Narrated by 'Abdullāh ibn 'Amr (رضي الله عنه): "The Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'Whoever killed a Mu'ahid [a person who is granted the pledge of protection by the Muslims] shall not smell the fragrance of paradise though its fragrance can be smelt at a distance of forty years [of traveling].'" (Reported in Ṣaḥiḥ Bukhārī, Vol. 9, Book 83, No. 49.)

Indeed, we do not rejoice in the unjust killings of Muslims or non-Muslims, this is not victory. Victory lies in applying the Qur'an and Sunnah upon the understanding of the Salaf us-Sālih.

Benefit: Terrorist Extremists Are Not upon Salafiyyah, Plain and Simple

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

The misrepresentation of Salafīyyah as the ideology of extremists is widespread in the media and commonly found on the tongues of Muslims and non-Muslims alike. For those who desire the truth, a little research uncovers the stark difference between the call of the extremists (to violence and political instability) and the call of the Salafīs (to Tawḥīd and the Sunnah). This affair is summarized by Abū Ḥakīm Bilāl Davis in the clip below, derived from a Q&A session from 2012. In a clear and articulate way, our beloved brother addresses the issue with examples from the Book of Allāh, the Sunnah of His Messenger ṣallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam and narrations from the Companions. This benefit is a concise explanation of the way of the Salaf in contrast to the way of the terrorists. So take a listen and share it with your brothers and sisters, may Allāh reward you. Benefit: The Khawārij Cause Corruption and Destruction Wherever They Go

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh Muḥammad Ghālib al-‘Umarī (حفظه الله) said on the 12th January 2017: “From the dawn of its existence, the Khawārij has only succeeded in enraging the Ummah because of their revolutions and upheavals, destruction, spilling of blood, and taking people out of the fold of Islām. They are the source of destruction and the reason for corruption wherever they settle.”

Benefit: What Do We Say About ISIS?

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Ḥasan al-Sumālī discuses ISIS, the false-claimants to an "Islamic State" and leadership over the Muslims. He explains that they are  Khawārij (renegades). They are those who the Prophet Muḥammad (sallallāhu ʿalayhī wa-sallam) labelled "dogs of the hellfire." The speaker continues: it is not permissible to feel sympathy for them...these individuals have ruined the image of Islām more than anyone with millions of dollars could have achieved, through their filthy and barbaric actions. Finally the speaker highlights that ISIS (and those like them) are bringing their fight not soley to the West but their major concern is to fight and overthrow Muslim rulership in the Muslim lands as evident through their countless murders of Muslims in Iraq and Syria. Their claim is Islām but their actions are those of violent political revolutionaries. he finishes by mentioning numerous names of the Salafī scholars who have academically annihilated ISIS, al-Qaida, Usamah bin Laden etc.
