Memorising Uṣul al-Sunnah
A wonderful interactive lecture by our noble Shaykh Muḥammad al-Anjarī (ḥafiẓahullāh) on memorising the monumental treatise, 'Foundations of the Sunnah,' by Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal, a book small in size but tremendous in benefit outlining the manhaj and ʿaqīdah of the Salaf.
This lecture is a wonderful interactive lesson given by our noble Shaykh as he aids and encourages his students around him in memorising the monumental treatise 'Uṣūl al-Sunnah' by Imām Aḥmad (raḥimahullāh), showing once more the love and humility of the mashāyikh of Ahl al-Sunnah to impart and engrave the true ʿaqīdah upon the hearts of the believers, may Allāh protect and preserve them all.
The tremendous treatise 'Uṣūl al-Sunnah' was written by the well known jurist and Imām, Abū 'ʿAbdillāh Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥanbal, born 164AH in the province of Baghdad and died at the age of seventy-seven in the year 241AH (raḥimahullāh taʿāla). He was a man of noble characteristics, well known for his benevolent manners and piety, and suffered for many years in the path of upholding the Sunnah and correct ʿaqīdah, never waivering in his preaching even when trialled with persecution.
His excellent treatise entitled 'Uṣūl al-Sunnah' or 'Foundations of the Sunnah' outlines the creed of Ahl ul-Sunnah wa-al-Jamā'ah in ʿaqīdah, and the first principle that he outlines is,
"We believe that from the foundations of the Sunnah is that: We hold on tight to what the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh were upon."
This very principle is paramount in order for one to understand the religion of al-Islām with a correct understanding as relayed by the Messenger of Allāh, and as understood by his noble Companions (radhiyAllāhu ʿʿʿanhum ajma'īn). It is in failing to adhere to this principle that many people went astray in the religion, be it in going to extremes like the Khawārij due to their lack of understanding, or in being too lax and innovating practises in the religion like the celebration of the mawlid as performed by the Barelwis. This treatise should be on every shelf and in the homes of every Muslim, a book worthy of being inscribed in gold.
This is a must listen lecture which will not only help one in the memorisation of this wonderful treatise, but our noble Shaykh Muḥammad al-ʿAnjarī also brings forth some valuable points in further explanation.
