From the Beautiful Aspects of Islām
The daʿwah (call) to single Allāh out with one’s worship, love, and hate for Allāh’s sake is based upon this principle, those who do not embrace and live by this are declared to be disbelievers.
Warning against shirk, associating partners in any type of worship with Allāh and being serious in this warning, and having hatred for polytheism. Whoever would uphold these two principles, in truth, is a Muslim, a worshipper of Allāh, not worshipping other than him, having hope in Allāh alone. “Call upon your Lord and He will answer you.”
[Ghāfir:60]
They said: “We supplicate to Allāh but He does not respond to (our invocations).”1
Ibrāhīm ibn Adham replied:
You know Allāh but yet you do not obey Him.
You recite the Qurʾān but you do not act upon it.
You know about the shayṭān (devil) but you agree with him.
