Benefit: The Prohibition of Sitting with Oppressive Fitnah Mongers

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh al-ʿAllāmah Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān (حفظه الله):

"Allāh prohibited us from sitting with the oppressive people, and from the most oppressive of people are the dūʿāt (callers) to fitnah. Do not sit with them. Do not listen to them. Do not say, ‘I know [i.e. I have knowledge], and they will not be able to mislead me’. No! Do not praise yourself akhī."

Benefit: Again? I Can't Take All This Fitnah!!

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Ustādh Abū Ḥākīm touches on the reality that most fitan (trials) are not realised by the people until the tail-end of their exposure. What appears to be a sudden occurrence is actually something that was brewing for some time, something that the scholars may have been addressing behind close doors. Secondly, many fall into emotional judgements, "not again", "I can't take this anymore" or other analysis devoid of knowledge or patience. The speaker explains that fitnah (trials) will come, wave upon wave, and to seek a utopian existence where no trials occur is to misunderstand the principles of the Salafī methodology, the qawāʿid (principles) are not rooted.  Lastly, he clarifies the need for knowledge, patience and forbearance in times of fitnah, explaining the characteristics of the patient astute Salafī versus the mustʿajil (hasty) reckless people who contain the lethal combination of ignorance and arrogance, taking to their blogs and other ranting platforms, increasing themselves in ignorance and harming others.

The benefit is excerpted from the lecture entitled: Ḥidāyah (Guidance) and Its Fruits, from the 2018 Summer Seminar: The Methodology of the Salaf in Times of Fitnah.

Benefit: Tap and Follow? Protect Your Religion

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Ustādh Abū Ḥākīm discusses the laissez-faire approach to following individuals on social networks. He discusses the lack of scrutiny exhibited in simply tapping and following everyone and anyone who shows some indication of religiosity or adds known URLs or retweets known reliable preachers. In some cases, in the past, unscrupulous characters have gamed others by creating generic, plausible names or slogans on social media and retweeted known speakers only to show their true colours once their following is large enough. The noble speaker encourages the listener to treat who you follow online according to Islamic principles of who to take knowledge from.

The benefit is excerpted from the lecture entitled: Ḥidāyah (Guidance) and Its Fruits, from the 2018 Summer Seminar: The Methodology of the Salaf in Times of Fitnah.

An encouraging lesson on the blessings of guidance and the pure fruits that it bears. Ustādh Abu Ḥakīm mentions three categories of people and their reality. Additionally,  numerous accounts of the Salaf are mentioned offering advice on cultivating oneself and utilising time wisely. The lecture builds upon a theme discussed by Ustādh Abū Idrīs in his khuṭbah, actions being based upon correct knowledge and action, the outcome of guidance.  From the '18 Toronto seminar, The Methodology of the Salaf in Times of Fitnah

Audio: Count Your Blessings - Be Thankful to Allāh

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Audio: Count Your Blessings - Be Thankful to Allāh

Ustādh Abū Idrīs gave the khuṭbah at Masjid al-Furqān (TROID) on 2018.06.29 discussing the blessings of ḥidāyah (guidance). A reminder to be thankful to Allah for his favours and guidance (to the Book and the Sunnah). The speaker encouraged the audience that when they see their rizq (provisions) diminishing, then turn to Allāh in fear. Also, when receiving blessings and increase, to turn to Allah in fear and thankfulness. He then encouraged the attendees to strive against weaknesses (temptations, evils, one's own soul) and to stand firm against the plots of the Shayṭān. He concluded by lamenting the travesty of a young man being deluded by his sheer love of leadership, such that it corrupts his intentions and leads to his misguided downfall.

Benefit: Fasting on ʿĀshūrāh/ʿArafah Expiates Minor Sins, Major Sins Require Sincere Repentance

In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

It has been authentically attributed to Prophet ﷺ, that he said, “Fasting on the day of ʿĀrafah expiates the sins of two years [i.e. previous year and upcoming year] and fasting on ʿĀshūrāh expiates the sins of one year”.

But his saying, “...expiates the sins of...”, does not necessitate that the major sins are also expiated without any repentance. The Prophet ﷺ said, “...Friday to Friday and Ramaḍān to Ramaḍān will be an expiation for the sins committed between them as long as the major sins are avoided”.

It is known that prayer is better than fasting and that fasting in Ramaḍān is better than fasting the day of ʿArafah. Likewise, (minor) sins will not be expiated except by avoiding the major sins as the Prophet ﷺ mentioned. Therefore, how can an individual think that by voluntarily fasting a day or two it will expiate adultery, stealing, drinking alcohol, gambling, (engaging in) magic, etc. This will not happen.

ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʾūd said: The people shall not cease to be upon goodness so long as their knowledge is acquired from their elders. But if they take (their knowledge) from the younger ones and the evil ones, they will be destroyed.
