“Follow the Religion of Ibrāhīm Ḥanīfā” (What Is Ḥanīfiyyah?)
Shaykh Ḥasan al-Ṣumālī
In the Name of Allāh, the Ever Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy
In Sūrah al-Naḥl, Allāh says, the meaning of which is:
ثُمَّ أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ أَنِ اتَّبِعْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ حَنِيفًا ۖ وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ ﴿١٢٣﴾
“Then, We have sent the revelation to you: ‘Follow the religion of Ibrāhīm Ḥanīfā and he was not of the Mushrikīn.'”
[Sūrah al-Naḥl, 16:123]
Allāh mentions Ḥanīf in His Book many times. In addition to that, in the aforementioned verse, Allāh commands us to follow the religion of Ibrāhīm Ḥanīfā. What does Ḥanīf mean, both linguistically and in Allāh’s legislation? What does Ḥanīf have to do with Prophet Ibrāhīm ʿalayhi salām? How can we obey Allāh in this command? Listen to our brother, Abū ʿAbdillāh Ḥasan al-Ṣumālī, as he provides answers to these questions from the explanation of the book, The Three Fundamental Principles, as explained by Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī and Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān.
