Importance of Knowing the Meaning of: Muḥammad Is the Messenger of Allāh

Shaykh Ḥasan al-Ṣumālī

Abū ʿAbdillāh Ḥasan al-Ṣumālī (hafiẓahullāh) explains the importance of knowing the meaning of Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh.  If we want to be upon the methodology of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa ṣallam) and enter into Paradise; if we want to be upon the Daʿwah Salafīyyah and not deviate from it; if we want to firmly hold onto the rope of Allāh; then we need to stick to the Sunnah of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) and understand what it means when we say, “Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh.”

  • If we understand the meaning of Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh, we will be met with happiness, pleasure and enjoyment.  By understanding its meaning, we would have the mercy of Allāh and we would never taste defeat or misery in our lives.
  • We find ourselves in trouble because we turned away from the command of our Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam).
  • Believing in the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) means:
    • you obey him in that which he commanded
    • you affirm that which he affirmed in matters of the unseen
    • you stay away from that which he forbade you from
    • you do not worship Allāh, except by that which the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) legislated
  • By uttering Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh you are saying that no one is supposed to be followed in truth, except the Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam).
    • But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam)) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission. [Sūrah Al-Nisāʾ, 4:65]
  • The one who disobeys Allāh and His Messenger (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) has clearly gone astray.
  • If people are opposing the command of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) and falling into that what he forbade, then we enjoin the good and forbid the evil.
  • If you understand the meaning of Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh, then this will suffice you.
    • Narrated Abū Hurayrah (raḍī Allāhu ʿʿʿanhu)
    • Allāh’s Apostle (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) said, “All my followers will enter Paradise, except those who refuse.”  They said, “O Allāh’s Apostle! Who will refuse?”  He said, “Whoever obeys me will enter Paradise, and whoever disobeys me is the one who refuses (to enter it).” [Taken from www.sahihalbukhari.com – The Book of Holding Fast to the  Book and Sunnah (#6811)]
  • The people who resemble and imitate the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) the most, are Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah, the Salafīyūn.
  • Turning away from the Sunnah of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) and imitating the disbelievers indicates a deficiency in īmān.
  • The benefits of obeying the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) is that this obedience will lead to Paradise and happiness.
    • And whoso obey Allāh and the Messenger (Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam)), then they will be in the company of those on whom Allāh has bestowed His Grace, of the Prophets, the Siddiqūn, the martyrs and the righteous.  And how excellent these companions are! [Sūrah Al-Nisāʾʾ, 4:65]
  • The best guidance is the guidance of Muḥammad (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) means:
    • everything which is khayr (good/beneficial) is found in the Sunnah
    • everything which is bad and detrimental is in opposition to the Sunnah

If we want to be upon this methodology and enter into Paradise; if we want to be upon the Daʿwah Salafīyyah and not deviate from it; if we want to firmly hold onto the rope of Allāh; then we need to stick to the Sunnah of the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-ṣallam) and understand what it means when we say, “Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allāh.”
