The misguided use the same excuse as the people of Jāhiliyyah and the enemies of Nuh (ʿalayhi al-salām) — Why would we follow people who are poor and lowly? The truth is not recognized by PhDs and high status but is recognized with Allāh as those who follow His Messenger (ﷺ), his companions and those who came after them. Our Prophet (ﷺ) and his companions had PhDs or diplomas? No. What they had and what they called to was the truth, and what we call to is the truth. The truth is the truth regardless of who is calling to it — Somalis, Afghanis, or uneducated converts!
