Fasting the month of Ramaḍān is an obligation upon all Muslim men and women who are capable of fasting. Fasting is also recommended for boys and girls who have passed the age of seven years old who are able to endure it; it is also upon those in authority over them to order them to fast if they can endure it — the same way they are ordered to establish the prayer. The principle for this is in Allāh’s saying:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ ﴿١٨٣﴾ أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَاتٍ ۚ فَمَن كَانَ مِنكُم مَّرِيض…
In the West, Muslims often interact with non-Muslims in discussions surrounding Islām. Some Muslims, in these situations, bring up issues such as Jihād and the Ḥijāb. Meanwhile, they fail to convey the most important aspect of the religion — Tawḥīd (that none has the right of worship except Allāh). Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn (رحمه الله) said:1
Indeed, many of the general folk think that Laylah al-Qadr [i.e.the Night of Decree] is on the fifteenth of Shaʿbān, and what will occur in the upcoming year is written in it; however, it is known that Laylah al-Qadr is in Ramaḍān. The proof for that is His statement:
إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ ﴿١﴾
‘Verily, We have sent it [this Qurʾān] down in the night of al-Qadr [Decree],’
[al-Qadr, 97:1]
And His statement:
حم ﴿١﴾ وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ ﴿٢﴾ إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُّبَارَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ …
Therefore, whoever remembers that his deeds are recorded, written and presented to the All Knowing, the All Aware, it is then appropriate that he takes account of himself, does good deeds and repents to Allāh for his sins and shortcomings.

It has become commonplace when one is told: “I have a gift for you”, that he looks toward the hand of the gifter to see if he is carrying something or waits for him to reach in his pocket, forgetting that from types of gifts one can receive—which is indeed considered to be from the best, most honourable and beautiful types of gifts—is the matter of knowledge.
