The Manner of Praying After the Appointed Time

Ṣalāh that is performed after its appointed time should be performed in the same manner as if it was performed at its proper time. This is because the performance of any act of worship after its appointed time should mirror performance at its appointed time. This is a well-known judicial rule. Likewise, if he was to perform a daytime prayer in the night, he should recite quietly. The evidence for this is the following: The saying of the Messenger (صلى الله...

The Culture of Arrogance and Entitlement That May Befool the Young Student

[Q]: What is your advice for those who belittle their elders in age? For example, they belittle a man who is upon the sunnah for thirty or fourty years but he does not know the Arabic language and he does not know from the Qurʾān except a little. So they would come back from al-Madīnah and belittle them by saying: “Look at them! They are 60 years of age and they do not comprehend the Arabic language.” They belittle them so that they can be raised in the sight of the people. [A]: If an Englishman, a Frenchman, or an American who does not comprehend the Arabic language thereafter acknowledges...

Mentioning the Good Qualities of the Refuted Innovator Is to Call to Him

[Q]: “O Shaykh! Do we warn against them without mentioning their good qualities for example, or do we mention their good qualities and their bad (qualities)?” [A]: If you mention their good qualities, then you have called to them. No, do not mention their good qualities — mention the error which they are upon only. For you are not responsible for studying their deeds or evaluating their personalities. You are responsible for clarifying the error which they have in order that they may repent from it, and in order that others may be warned against them. As for if you were to mention their good...

Existence of the Creator: Using the World Itself as Evidence to Refute the Agnostics

Imām ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Nāṣir al-Saʿdī (d. 1413 AH) said: A group of agnostics once gathered in front of one of the scholars of Islām—I believe it was Abū Ḥanīfah—they said to him: “What is the evidence of the existence of the Creator?” He replied: “Leave me as my mind is currently busy with a strange matter.” They said: “What is this matter?” He replied: “News has reached me that in the ocean, there is a massive ship laden with amazing treasures whose ingress and egress occurs without anyone physically driving it, or caring for the contents of its hull.” They said to him: “Are you crazy?” He...

The Ruling on Utilising Medication in the Month of Ramaḍān to Prevent the Onset of Menses

[Q]: What is the ruling on using medication solely in the month of Ramaḍān to prevent [the onset of] menses in order to fast the entire month? [A]: Allāh has allowed women to break their fast during the days of their menses and postnatal bleeding, and indeed, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you.
