Bukhārī related from Abī Hurayrah that he said, ‘None from amongst the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) had more ḥadīths than me, except for ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar. Verily he used to write, and I did not write.’ Ṣaḥiḥ al-BukhārīAl Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr said:1 Indeed, it is mentioned in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim from Abī Saʿīd al-Khudrī in marfūʿ’2 form, ‘Whoever writes from me something other than the Qurʾān, then let him erase it.’ Ibnus al-Ṣalāh said, ‘And from what has been narrated to us about it is that it was disliked by: ʿUmar, and Ibn Masʿūd, and Zayd Ibn Thābit, and A…

The knowledge of the Sunnah has reached us via means of the ḥadīth of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ). The ḥadīth refers to a comibnation of a text and a chain of narration (isnād), beginning from the Prophet (ﷺ) and ending at the scholar who recorded that ḥadīth. The Sunnah refers to the commands, prohibitions, sayings, actions, and tacit approvals of the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ). The whole of the Sunnah falls under the command of Allāh in His Book: “Whatsoever the Messenger gives you then take it and whatsoever he prohibits you from then refrain from it.” [Sūrah al-Ḥashr 59:7] The tābi…

On the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (raḍī Allāhu ʿanhumā) who said, ‘The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) took me by my shoulders and said: ‘Be in this world as if you are a stranger or a wayfarer.’’ And Ibn ʿUmar (raḍī Allāhu ʿanhumā) used to say: ‘If you reach the evening, then do no wait for the morning, and if you reach the morning, then do not wait for the evening. And take (advantage of) your health before times of sickness, and take (advantage of) your life before your death.’ Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn (raḥimahullāh) explained:1 “The fortieth ḥadīth (of al-Nawawī’s ‘al-Arbaʿīn al-Nawawiyyah’): On the autho…

So here I would like to point out the benefit of this knowledge humbly called, ‘mustalaḥah al-ḥadīth’ (the science of ḥadīth), and its effect upon the divinely-revealed, and historical sciences, and other than them from the various types of sciences which are established from the authentic texts, and which rely upon it. So verily the Muslims from the first generation had a great concern for memorization of the chains of narration in their Revelation from the Book and the Sunnah, the like of which no nation from before them had. Shaykh Aḥmad Muḥammad ShākirSo verily the Muslims – from the fi…

The reality of this matter that the servant differs in what he asks of knowledge and guidance, and of what he seeks to ask. So with remembrance of Allāh and turning towards Him, Allāh guides such a person — as He said: “O My servants! All of you are misguided, except whomsoever I guide. So seek your guidance from me.” Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymīyyah Knowing One’s Priority Hudhayfah (raḍī Allāhu ʿʿʿanhu) said: “The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) related matters to us. I have seen one of them, and I am waiting for the other. He (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) informed us: “Trus…

How can it be right for anybody not to understand and ponder its meanings? Hence the Companions, may Allāh be pleased with them, would not move on to the next ten āyāt until they had understood and put into practice the previous passage. [Q]: I read Qurʾān regularly but I do not understand its meanings. Will I still be rewarded by Allāh for that? [A]: The Qurʾān is blessed as Allāh the Exalted states: كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُولُو الْأَلْبَابِ ‎﴿٢٩﴾‏ “This is a Book which We have sent down to you, full of blessings that the…

My Brother and Sister in Islām – there is no doubt that you know of excellence of memorizing the Qurʾān and the excellence of teaching it. The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said: “The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qurʾān and teaches it.” Presented to you are some rules which will assist in memorising the Qurʾān, may Allāh benefit us by them. The First Rule: Ikhlās – (Sincerity) The purification of one’s intention and correcting one’s desire is obligatory. It is likewise for making ones concern with and memorisation of the Qurʾān for the sake of Allāh, the Sublime and Exalted, and for…

As for the life that Allāh affirmed in the Qurʾān for the martyrs, and the life that has been affirmed for the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in which he is able to return the greetings of salām (peace) to whosoever sends it upon him, then both of them refer to the life of the barzakh (a state of existence between the present life and the Hereafter); an existence which cannot be truly comprehended by the people of this world. Al-ʿAllāmah Muḥammad al-Amīn al-ShanqītīAllāh, the Most High, said: “And do not say about those who are killed fighting in the Path of Allāh that they are dead…

I also advise you with five matters: when you are treated unjustly, do not behave unjustly; when you are praised, do not become happy; when you are criticized, do not become upset; when you are not believed, do not become angry; and if people act deceitfully towards you, do not act deceitfully towards them. Al-ʿAllāmah ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Nāṣir al-SaʿdīAllāh the Exalted said: وَلَا تَسْتَوِي الْحَسَنَةُ وَلَا السَّيِّئَةُ ۚ ادْفَعْ بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ فَإِذَا الَّذِي بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ عَدَاوَةٌ كَأَنَّهُ وَلِيٌّ حَمِيمٌ ‎﴿٣٤﴾‏ “The good deed and the evil deed cannot be equal. Repel evil…
