Tablīghī Blasphemy: The Messenger (ﷺ) Visits Our School in Deoband and Appraises Our Books
Al-ʿAllāmah Ḥammūd al-Tuwayjirī
Al-ʿAllāmah Ḥammūd al-Tuwayjirī [d. 1413 AH] said:
From among the shameful mockeries mentioned by Muḥammad Aslam concerning the senior tablīghīn is that they claim that their school stationed in the Deoband province was established by the Prophet (ﷺ ), and that he would occasionally visit their dwelling with his companions and his khulafāʾ to scrutinise the books of the school.
Al-ʿAllāmah Muḥammad Taqī al-Din al-Hilālī said, after mentioning this disastrous claim [sarcastically]:1
‘Read O mankind! And allow your surprise to build at the way the Prophet (ﷺ) established a school that has declared war upon his own Sunnah and spurns the very guidance he espouses. For [the school] is Māturīdī in its creed, Ḥanafi in terms of its madh`hab, established upon complete disobedience to the Messenger (ﷺ) and the creation of division and discord in the dīn.
The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) could never be pleased with such [an institution], nor his rightly guided khulafāʾ, nor Abū Ḥanīfah (may Allāh have mercy on him). This is because the creed of Abū Ḥanīfah, as narrated by the trustworthy, is far removed from the Māturīdī [creed], blind imitation, and the creation of discord and dissension [among the Muslims]. However, if one possesses no shame let him do as he pleases, and utter whatever he desires.’
Al-Hilālī also said:
‘Why should the Prophet (ﷺ) have to present himself to them for the purpose of scrutinizing their books? Has their standing for the Prophet (ﷺ) fallen to such depths that he has become their accountant, tracking the spending of their school? This is a sufficient example of the detestful and immoral manner of behaving with regard to the Prophet (ﷺ). There is no change of condition, nor might, except from Allāh. What has ignorance, blind imitation, and fanaticism driven its people towards?’
[Shaykh Ḥammūd] adds: What has been related in this remarkable story is among the greatest lies perpetrated against the Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) and upon his khulafāʾ and companions. It is confirmed from multiple lines of independent enquiry that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
Whoever lies against me intentionally, let him take his seat in the Fire.
So those who invent lies against the Prophet (ﷺ) and his khulafāʾ and companions should not consider themselves safe from a generous portion of this grave promise of torment. Likewise, those among the tablīghīn who claim the truthfulness of such lies should also not consider themselves safe from the punishment of such blasphemy.
