The Unintelligence of Following Opinion Over Revelation

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim

A warning against following the opinions and whims of man over the perfection of revelation.

Imām Ibn al-Qayyim (d. 751 AH) said:

Every person in possession of even an iota of intelligence knows that the corruption of this world and its ultimate devastation is borne out of favouring the opinion of men over revelation. Or by prioritising obedience to the desires and whims of men over rational, logical thinking (i.e. returning to the sources of revelation and guidance). Following the desires and opinions of men over revelation does not settle in the heart without its impending destruction. This course of action, when found in any ummah, has led to complete, unadulterated corruption.

There is nothing worshipped in truth except for Allāh; How much truth has been extinguished behind these erroneous opinions? How much falsehood has been normalised? How much guidance has evaporated? How much misguidance has thrived? How many sanctuaries of īmān have been destroyed? Instead, occupied by the religion of Satan? For most of the companions of the raging Fire are from among the adopters of opinion who have turned away from listening to revelation and rationality. Rather, they are in a state more evil and detestable than donkeys. They are the ones who will say on the Day of Resurrection:

لَوْ كُنَّا نَسْمَعُ أَوْ نَعْقِلُ مَا كُنَّا فِي أَصْحَابِ السَّعِيرِ

“Had we but listened or used our intelligence, we would not have been among the dwellers of the blazing Fire!”
(al-Mulk, 67:10)
