Why Do the Scholars Write Refutations and Do They Harden One’s Heart?
Al-ʿAllāmah Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz Āl al-Shaykh
Why it is that so many of the writings of the Aʿimatu-daʿwah (Imāms of the daʿwah) were refutation oriented? And is it true that books of refutation harden the heart?

Then the aṣl of refutation is that it is something that is legislated and required because it establishes the proof whilst refuting those questions and arguments that are presented by those who oppose (mukhālifūn) the truth, the mushrikūn, or the deviant ones, each according to his condition.
