Questions Posed to Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī (Masjid Raḥmah Conference 2001)

Shaykh ʿUbayd al-Jābirī

A very informative and beneficial Q&A session by our noble Shaykh ʿUbayd ibn ʿAbdillāh al-Jābirī addressing a number of issues ranging from ḥizbīyyah to divorce.

[Q1]: We are a small group of salafī brothers in the USA and we used to be one masjid until there occured between us a fitnah and a split occured between the admin, the general people, and the imam who was with the common people of the masjid. Some of the general people felt this was due to the administration being hard, squandering the money and acting as though they were leaders of the Muslim land and not being truthful. The administration has a problem with the people, and the administration felt that due to the ongoing effort of some of the common people in seeking leadership and petitioning to overthrow the leadership of the masjid;  as a result the masjid was split and another masjid was formed in another city the distance of approximately 25-30 minutes driving. Enmity and hatred appeared and this led to boycotting, name calling, threats and general distrust; no salams, warning against each other and isolated instances of ḥizbīyyah. Do you advise us to peacefully co-exist as two seperate masjids with cooperating and spreading the daʿwah or go back to the old masjid with the old administration, or do we go back to the old masjid with a new administration and if so how do we go about establising this new administration?

[Q2]: O Shaykh! We affirm that the manhaj of Ahl al-Sunnah is that we distance ourselves from and abandon the people of innovation, but how do we deliever the daʿwah al-Salafīyyah to them?

[Q3]: Is it permissible for a Salafī to pray in a masjid that is not Salafī even if they were to live right next to the masjid and there was no Salafī masjid in that vicinity?

[Q4]: Should i use a specific hand to wash my feet when making wuḍuʾ?

[Q5]: A man divorced his wife with the third divorce, then he comes to the imām or one of the students of knowledge, saying ‘I have a doubt regarding whether or not my first divorce counts becasue I was angry, or whether it was a talqaʿ bidʿīyyah becayse she was on her menses.’ What should we do regarding this issue?

[Q6]: The Shaykh previously mentioned it is not permissible for women tocollect money as child support from those children that were born out of wedlock, or before Islam as it is ḥarām to collect. What about those who get married and divorced, is it persmiisbe for her to go to the government to force him if is he is not paying willingly?

[Q7]: The Shaykh mentioned earlier the importance of staying away from the people of bidʿah, but what if they asked one of the students to come to their masjid to give classes on whatever the student wants to teach and from whichever book he wishes to teach from, is it them permissible?
