Shaykh al-Islām Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb’s mentions in his letter to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Suwaydī (one of the scholars of Iraq at that time):
I convey to you that I am a follower and not an innovator. My creed and religion that I worship Allāh with is the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa-al-Jamāʿah which the leaders of the Muslims were upon, like the four Imāms and those who follow in their way until the day of judgment.
Likewise, I have clarified to the people (the importance of having) sincerity towards the religion for the sake of Allāh, and I have forbade them from calling upon the dead…
The Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) came with clear guidance and the Companions believed and followed it. They followed his commands (to the best of their abilities) and they stayed away from that which the Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded them to stay away from. This blessed daʿwah—al-daʿwah al-Salafīyyah—encompasses actions, beliefs, character etc.
Allāh says (what can be translated as):
“And verily, you (O Muḥammad ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) are on an exalted standard of character.”

As for the beard, it is impermissible to shave it or take anything from it at any given time; rather it is an obligation to let it grow due to that which has been affirmed in the Ṣaḥīḥayn (Bukhārī and Muslim) on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar (raḍi Allāhu ʿanhu) who said, the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
‘Oppose the polytheists, lengthen the beard and clip the moustaches.’
