Resolving Doubts Regarding the State of Purification

Whoever is assured regarding his state of purity, doubtful of its invalidation or vice versa should base his actions upon that which he possesses certainty regarding. Imām Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn (d. 1421 AH)If someone is certain that he has purified himself but doubtful of invalidating that purity, his course of action should be based on the state he holds certainty regarding. This is a general principle that applies to anything that would obligate ghusl or wuḍūʾ. For example, a man performs wuḍūʾ for Ṣalāt al-Maghrib. When the adhān for ʿIshāʾ is called, he stands to pray but d…

Why Do We Wipe the Top of the Socks in Wuḍūʿ?

[Wiping over the socks] is performed by wiping most of the apparent, upper portion of the foot only. Imām Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn (d. 1421 AH)Wiping is specifically targeted to this area because of the ḥadīth of Mughīrah ibn Shuʿbah (رضي الله عنه): “He wiped his socks.” The implied meaning here is that he wiped the uppermost part of the sock. Also, because of the ḥadīth of ʿAlī (رضي الله عنه) who said: “If this religion was based completely on opinion, it would have been more befitting to wipe the bottom of the sock than its top. I saw the Messenger of Allāh (صلى الله عليه وسلم) w…

The Ramifications of the Sincere Shahādah

True fulfillment of the meaning of the testification that: «لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّٰهُ» وأن «مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰهِ» ‘There is nothing deserving of worship in truth except for Allāh’ in one’s heart, belief in the truthfulness of these words and bearing witness to this with sincerity all stipulate that one worships Allāh alone. His worship will be out of recognition of His extreme sublimity, in a state of awe, fear of His punishment, love of Him, hope for His reward, seeking to exalt Him while putting one’s complete trust in Him. His heart must be filled with this to the exte…

Which Animal Skins Are Permissible to Wear?

The correct opinion [in this matter] is what is narrated in some wordings of the ḥadīth: ‘Tanning [the hide of an animal] is through its lawful slaughtering.’ The word used is ‘slaughtering’ which only purifies the animal that is permissible for eating. For example, if you were to slaughter a donkey [impermissible for consuming], and you proclaimed the name of Allāh on it, and allowed the blood to run, this would not be termed lawful slaughter. Based on this, we say: The hide of any animal which is ḥarām for us to consume, even if that animal is considered pure while alive, is not purifi…

The Danger of Misusing Titles in Islām such as “al-Shaḥīd” or “al-Imām”

“In these latter times, it has become rampant among people to refer easily to individuals as being ‘Imām’. It has even gotten to the point where the one being given this title is from among the smallest person of knowledge. This is a matter that, had it not been for the extreme effects such titles hold, would have been considered insignificant. However, these titles have an effect as a person may hear an individual described as an imām and henceforth emulate his opinions. Despite the fact, this person is not deserving of such emulation. This is also like the widely dispersed saying concern…
