The Two Categories of Allāh’s Attribute of Wanting and Understanding the Coexistence of Divine Decree and Free Will
Ḥumayd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said: I heard Muʿawiyah (رضي الله عنه), while delivering the khuṭbah, say: I heard the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) say: “Whomever Allāh desires to be a means of goodness, He gives him understanding of this dīn…”1

The evidence of this is that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said to Mālik ibn Ḥuwayrith (رضي الله عنه) and his companions: “If the time for ṣalāh arrives, then let one of you call the adhān.”1 At the time, they wer…

The Ruling on the Adhān Made by a Child
If the adhān is called by a child who has the ability to discern, it is considered valid. The discerning child is one that is between the age of seven and puberty. He is termed discerning because he has the ability to understand speech addressed to him, and to answer accordingly. Some scholars also say: The discerning child should not be identified by age but by the presence of this characteristic.
As for those who identify discernment by age, they support their view with the saying of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم): “Command your children with prayer by completion of the age of seven, and…

How to Choose the Muʿadhin Among Multiple Volunteers
If the Selected Muʾadhin Is Present
If two people volunteer to call the adhān, we should choose the best of them for it. This issue is applicable to any masjid in which there is no pre-specified person who regularly calls the adhān. If there is already a specified muʾadhin (i.e. as selected by the Imām or the masjid authority), then the matter of calling the adhān should remain as it is, due to the saying of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم): “A man shall not say ‘āmīn’ for another while in his jurisdiction [i.e., the jurisdiction of the one saying āmīn’].”1 Thus, similarly we can say: A muʾad…
